This ultra-rare classic Ferrari 250 GTO has sold at auction for £20.2m, making it the second most expensive car ever sold in the world (first place belongs to a Bugatti Type 57SC which sold for between £20m and £26m in 2010) and the also most expensive car ever sold in the UK.
This classic sports car is the world’s most sought-after car with just 39 built between 1962 and 1964, of which two now belong to Chris Evans and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason. It is powered by a 300hp 3.0-litre V12 engine which is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and curb weight, capable of 0-60mph in 6.1 seconds before reach a top speed of 174mph, impressive for a car launched back in the 1960s.
This 1963 model – chassis number 5095 – Ferrari 250 GTO has an impressive racing history, finishing second place in the 1963 Tour de France road race, driven by Lucien Bianchi and Carlo Maria Abate, and won the Les Andelys hillclimb, the Rallye du Limousin and the Rallye de Picardie in 1964.
This classic Ferrari 250 GTO was reportedly sold by British businessman Jon Hunt, the same man who bought it in 2008 for a then world record £15.7million. And four years after the purchase, He already has an extra £4.5 million in profit to his name. The identity of the buyer remains secret.
Absolut has teamed up with Jamie Hewlett, the co-founder and illustrator of band Gorillaz, to create the Absolut London Edition Art Bottle. Described as a “unique take on London’s style and fashion pioneers over the past 200 years,” the bottle features seven characters from the past who have influenced and shaped London’s culture. It represent the city’s diverse heritage, “spanning the ages from Dickensian and 18th Century Dandy, through to Pinstripe Gent, 60’s Chick, Ska, Punk and 80’s ‘Casual’”.
For Absolut London I chose to re-create seven iconic characters from different eras who are largely defined by their style as well as their impactful contribution to London’s culture at the time.
The Absolut London Edition Art Bottle will be available through Harvey Nichols and Selfridges on March 1st at a recommended retail price of £20.99, and will be available worldwide beginning April.
